Comparison between two predicting methods of labial coarticulation

چکیده
The construction of a highly intelligible talking head involving relevant lip gestures is especially important for hearing impaired people. This requires realistic rendering of lip and jaw movements and thus relevant modeling of lip coarticulation. This paper presents the comparison between the Cohen & Massaro prediction algorithm and our concatenation plus completion strategy guided by phonetic knowledge. Although results show that Cohen & Massaro perform slightly better, the concatenation and completion strategy approximates consonant clusters markedly better particularly for the protrusion parameter. These results also show the concatenation and completion strategy could be easily improved via the recording of better reference models for isolated

A phonetic concatenative approach of labial coarticulation
Predicting the effects of labial coarticulation is an important aspect with a view to developing an artificial talking head. This paper describes a concatenation approach that uses sigmoids to represent the evolution of labial parameters. Labial parameters considered are lip aperture, protrusion, stretching and jaw aperture. A first formal algorithm determines the relevant transitions, i.e. tho...
متن کاملGestural overlap, place of articulation and speech rate - an x-ray investigation
This investigation deals with the production of consonant sequences in French, with particular focus on overlap of labial, apical, tongue-dorsum and velar gestures. X-ray and acoustic data are obtained for two speakers, at two speaking rates, normal-conversational and fast. Speech rate is varied in order to explore gestural overlapping possibilities, when places of articulation differ between p...
متن کاملInter speaker variability of labial coarticulation with the view of developing a formal coarticulation model for French
Explaining the effects of labial coarticulation is a difficult problem that gave rise to many studies and models. Most of the time small corpora were exploited to design these models. In this paper we describe the realization and exploitation of a corpus with ten speakers. This corpus enables the most invariant labial features (protrusion, stretching and lip opening) to be established. Then we ...
متن کاملLUCIA a new italian talking-head based on a modified cohen-massaro's labial coarticulation model
LUCIA, a new Italian talking head based on a modified version of the Cohen-Massaro’s labial coarticulation model is described. A semi-automatic minimization technique, working on real cinematic data, acquired by the ELITE optoelectronic system, was used to train the dynamic characteristics of the model. LUCIA is an MPEG-4 standard facial animation system working on standard FAP visual parameter...
متن کاملSonographic & Optical Linguo-Labial Articulation Recording system (SOLLAR)
We present here a customized method developed jointly by scientists at LOLA (Potsdam University) and Haskins Laboratories (New Haven) for the recording of both tongue and lip motion during speech tasks in young children. The method is currently being used to investigate the development of 1) coarticulation (resistance and anticipatory coarticulation, cf. two other abstracts submitted); and 2) a...
